Guludo Beach Lodge

  • How
    & Why

    NOTES:

We set out with a single-minded determination to demonstrate just how successful integrating philanthropy into a tourism business could be. Today, looking at Guludo Beach Lodge and its impact on the surrounding area, we are very proud to see the vision realised.

Northern Mozambique is touted to be the next travel “hot spot”. It’s not hard to see why… the best beaches in Africa, pristine coral reefs and rich cultures.

Guludo is a small, eco-chic lodge in theQuirmbas National Park, perfectly positioned to show off all Mozambique’s greatest treasures.

Featured in “100 Best Hotels of the World,” Sunday Times Travel Magazine, 2011.

Our holiday accommodation provides everything you need and nothing you don’t. With high roofs, gentle sea breezes, beach views, alfresco en-suite bathrooms with a stunning “loo with a view”; barefoot luxury never felt more indulgent.

One of the World’s top 20 Deserted Beaches by The Observer.

Our beautiful adobe bandas have been hand-built by a local workforce and design by award-winning architects Cullum & Nightingale; combining the best of traditional techniques with clever design features and eco-technology to provide the ultimate in barefoot luxury.

Each banda is just footsteps from the beach. The large double doors and window create a natural fusion of the in and outdoor spaces and a feeling of openness.

A large high roof opens upwards and outwards, covering the spacious the stylish Swahili-inspired veranda, hammock and traditional beach sun loungers. The design takes advantage of the gentle sea breezes, ensuring the banda stays cool, day and night. Inside is a discrete suttered window (reminiscent of a castles’ arrow slit or lancet) sits above a writing desk, where the morning tea, coffee and pastries are left. The sleeping area is on a raised platform boasting a lavish king-sized bed under an extravagant, hand-crafted mosquito net; ensuring the most is made of the dazzling sea views.

    ‘Why’ Statistics:

    • Nema foundation was established by the founders of the Guludo Beach Lodge to work in the areas around the lodge to achieve their charitable goals.
    • Nema works in 5 mains areas: health, water, education, enterprise and environment.
    • Nema currently works with 12 communities around Guludo—16,500 people
    • Achievements thus far:
    1. Feeds 800 children a  nutritious meal at school everyday
    2. Provides clean water for over 12,000 people from 30 water points
    3. Provides over 7,000 mosquito nets to mothers of young children
    4. Funds of 127 secondary school scholar
    • Health:
    1. In the Guludo area the average life expectancy is 38 years old and 30% of children do not survive their 5th birthday
    2. Although preventable and treatable, malaria is the number one child killer in Mozambique—every day 125 children die from malaria, giving Mozambique one of the highest child mortality rates in the world.
    • Using insecticide treated mosquito nets can reduce child mortality by 20%. In 2007 and 2009 over 4,400 nets were distributed through workshops to each woman in 6 villages who were either pregnant or had children under 5, resulting in over 10,000 people sleeping under nets. In 2010 the project expanded to include 12 villages.
    • Educations:
    1. Before Nema started work, less than 1% of children went on to study at secondary school and less than 20% completed all 7 years of primary school. The underlying reason being the prohibitive cost and need for children to help gather food.
    2. In 2006, 80 Children were regularly attending primary school. In 2009 over 300 children were receiving a nutritious meal every day and regularly attending school, and in 2010, 803 children were receiving a nutritious meal every day at school
    • This increase in school attendance reflects the severe food shortages and value for food in the Guludo area. Each child receives a nutritious meal providing 80% of the child’s needs for the day.
    1. Alongside the feeding project we are supporting the schools in developing school farms to one day replace the food bought from central Mozambique
    • Enterprise:
    1. Over 150 people either work at or sell their produce to the Guludo Beach Lodge—help build and support local entrepreneurs
    • Conservation:
    1. Humpback Whale Research—since 2006 Guludo Beach Lodge has been collecting whale data to help the international conservation of the species funded by Guludo guest who want to go and see these beautiful mammals.
    2. Seafood Buyers’ Guide- developed a seafood buyer’s guide to promote responsible purchasing of seafood within the hospitality industry in this region.
    3. Reef Surveys— They continually carry out reef surveys, monitoring various sites around the Quirimbas National Park, including sites both in and outside of marine sanctuaries.
    4. Forestry & Agriculture- They are currently supporting two primary schools to develop school farms and within our nutrition project, helping families to develop kitchen gardens. In addition, Guludo is planning to start work with local farmers to improve agricultural techniques and protect the coastal forest.
