If you love hitting the slopes and being ahead when it comes to innovation, you’ll love the brainchild of ski-makers Tobias Luthe and Jan Reger. Grown, has been fusing eco-design with cutting edge technology in its production of handmade skis since 2007. They provide eco-conscious skiers the opportunity to lose themselves with mother nature at her alpine best, with the knowledge that their skis are mother nature-friendly.

Both very keen skiers (and windsurfers, so no doubt they’ll be working on ecofriendly boards next, if they haven’t started already?), Luthe and Reger decided to merge their knowledge of sustainability, sport and engineering to pioneer the use of alternative materials in making snowsports equipment. Grown skis are mostly made out of wood from sustainably managed European forests and use reinforcing fibres from volcanic basalt, thus eliminating conventionally used glass and carbon fibres that embody considerably more primary energy and emissions. As such, Grown offers some of the most eco-efficient skis on the market, emitting just 40% of the Co2 produced in the making of non-alternative skis of a similar standard. In 2009 the company was awarded the IPSO Volvo sports design award for Ecodesign.

In general skiing is one of the most un-eco friendly sports in the world…If like us, you want your grandchildren to be able to enjoy that hard to beat feeling of skiing down pristine while slopes, beyond choosing ‘greener’ resorts (hyperlink?) is opting for ‘greener’ skis…
