Each handmade piece of Artlantique furniture, is richly engrained with African history and cultural traditions are literally weathered into the material.
Catalan designer, Ramón Llonch’s love of Africa and cycling, led him to the beaches of Senegal, where he was inspired by the array of abandoned, flat-bottomed boats (or ‘pirogues’ as they’re traditionally called). “Seen from a distance they form an extensive, colourful mosaic and I asked myself if, after their long, oceanic life, the wood could radiate that same energy in a different form, and so preserve the history of the fishermen. He saw the potential in engaging local artisans to create up-cycled off-beat creations that would appeal to design-led furniture lovers around the world.
The Artlantique philosophy of ‘sustaining long-held traditions by transforming something old into something new’ is reflected in each custom-crafted creation, providing a welcomed contrast to the glued veneers of mass-produced, furnishings.
Based in Barcelona, this company’s heart is undeniably in Senegal, with the sourcing of “raw material”, craftsmanship and the soul is all 100% made in Africa. Utilising the skills of craftsmen and redundant materials; strengthening local economies and social bonds in a “union of fishing and carpentry in Africa,”, with beautiful results..
